General Information
Abilene is a city of the second-class with a population of about 6,700. The City has adopted a Commission-Manager form of government with a five member Commission, elected at-large. Regular meetings of the Governing Body are held at the Abilene Public Library, 209 NW 4th St., beginning at 4:00 p.m., the second and fourth Monday of each month. The public is encouraged to attend and participate in local government. Information about other City boards and commissions is presented below:

OTHER SERVICES
Voter Registration
    If you are a new resident of Abilene, or are moving to a different residence within the city, you must register to vote at the City Offices (419 N. Broadway) or County Offices (1st & Buckeye), before the registration books are closed, 20 days prior to an election. All Federal, State and local elections will be announced in the local newspapers.
Abilene Public Library
    The Abilene Library contains 70,000 volumes, a video library, public FAX service, and inter-library capabilities. Activities include the Children's Summer Reading Program.
Chamber of Commerce
    The Abilene Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary, non-profit organization of business and professional people, working together in a planned manner, to promote business, assist community development and advance human progress. The Chamber offices are located at 500 N. Buckeye.
Memorial Health System
    Consisting of Memorial Hospital; Emergency Medical Services of Dickinson County; Home Health & Hospice of Dickinson County, Village Manor, and The Fitness Center.
City Parks
    The Eisenhower City Park, located one block north of Third and Pine Street features the municipal swimming pool, tennis courts, picnic areas, shelters, playground equipment, ballfields, and the grandstand. The BiCentennial Park is located at Mulberry & 15th Street. The North Pocket Park is located at Kuney & 16th.
Recreation Activities
    During the summer months, the Abilene Recreation Commission directs activities at the City Swimming Pool, tennis courts and ball diamonds. Swimming lessons, recreational and competitive swimming are offered at the city swimming pool. Tennis lessons are offered and the Commission organizes competitive baseball and softball for children and adults. The winter recreation program offers youth and adult basketball, plus dance, aerobics and gymnastics. Adult volleyball is offered and many community education classes, and many arts and crafts programs. Seasonal activities are published in the local newspaper.
Senior Citizens Center
    The Abilene Senior Citizens Center is open in the summer five days a week 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. The center is closed on Saturdays and Sundays for rentals through the Center Manager. Other activities include cards, pool, Bible study groups, blood pressure testing, bingo etc. Transportation is available through the Public Transportation mini bus, by calling 263-7266. Municipal Airport
    The Abilene Municipal Airport is located at 801 S. Washington St. The airport has a 4,200' paved and lighted main runway. Hangar rentals, fuel sales and aircraft maintenance services are also available.
Recycling Center
    In 1994, the Abilene Recycling Center opened their new 7,500 foot recycling facility and a 2,800 foot addition was added in the spring of 1996. Two full-time employees provide assistance in dropping off recyclables such as glass, plastics, paper, cans, and aluminum. The Recycling Center also offers a composting operation. Grass, leaves and other compost materials are received at a site adjacent to the municipal recycling center and is windrowed for composting.
Convention and Visitor Bureau
    The restored 1928 Union Pacific Depot is the home to an Abilene Visitor Information Center and 150 person meeting room and also houses the Abilene Convention and Visitor's Bureau. From the Eisenhower Center, to many beautifully restored historic homes, and the growing number of specialty shops, you will want to stop in at 201 NW 2nd to learn of Abilene's many attractions.
