State law requires municipal budgets to be approved and filed with the County Clerk on or before August 25th. To accommodate this schedule, the City Commission begins discussing the budget in May. Once the City receives the certified assessed valuation from Dickinson County, the City Commission authorizes the publication of the Notice of Budget Hearing.
The City Commission will conduct a public hearing for the purpose of hearing and answering objections of taxpayers relating to the proposed use of all funds and the amount of ad valorem tax.
