Sewer & Wastewater Department

Water & Sewer Department Responsibilities 

The Water Distribution and Sewer Collection Department is staffed by 4 employees. Some of their responsibilities include:

  • Meter reading
  • Installing new service connections
  • Maintenance and repairs to all water mains and service lines. 
  • Daily work order requests and Kansas One-call locates of the City's water and sewer lines. 
  • Repair and replacement of fire hydrants, valves, and shut-offs for non-payment. 
  • This crew also does all the routine and emergency sewer main cleaning in the City's sewer collection lines. The City contains roughly 50 to 60 miles of water and sewer mains.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Responsibilities

The City of Abilene operates a Sequencing Batch Reactor type wastewater treatment plant. Construction was completed and the plant came on line in April of 2008. The plant has a maximum capacity of 1.5 million gallons a day but typically treats 400,000 to 600,000 gallons a day.  

It has two full-time operators with a third operator whose duties include working in the Sewer Collection/Water Distribution Division. The plant operators monitor the operation of the plant 365 days of the year.
